HOLIKA AND PRAHLAD STORY
There was once a demon king called Hiranya kashyap in historical India. He had a sister named Holika and a son, Prahlad. Hiranyakashyap desired to deserve to be remembered forever so he carried out an extremely difficult task so Lord Brahma was forced to grant him wishes. Since the Lord didn’t want such an evil man to remain immortal, he twisted his boon. Once the wish was granted, the demon king became arrogant and wanted himself to be worshiped. His son Prahlad didn’t agree and went on worshiping his Lord Vishnu. Angry, the demon king tried to kill his own son. Finally asked the favour of his sister for help. Holika had a shield which could prevent her from any kind of harm from fire. The king made her sit in the bonfire, with Prahlad in her lap and the shield around her. She didn’t know that the shield wouldn’t work if someone else was under it too. Once inside the pyre, Prahlad kept praying to Lord Vishnu who saved him but Holika burnt to ashes in the pyre. Since then, this is done to symbolise the winning of good over evil. Even today, people celebrate this occasion. Huge bonfires are lit up every year on the evening of the full moon night of the Holi to burn the spirit of the evils. Hence the story associated with the soul of the celebration.
